Art is such a massive part of my life and I can say the same for so many other young people: In my first ever art class my teacher talked about how using different mediums could create different effects. I would argue that art is a medium in itself. Art has been used to present opinions and challenge authority. And, just as miraculously, art has been a way for ordinary people to pour out their hearts without the weight of words. Which moves me onto my next point. What is art actually supposed to be? What is it supposed to do , exactly? It was only when we branched out to some of the more innovative artists that I came to truly love the subject, and to understand that fundamentally it is about freedom of expression. My favourite artist was, and still is with no doubt, Picasso. Odd, considering that when I was younger all I saw in his work were a load of odd shapes and lines. Not because of his style itself, but the courage behind it. Rather than painting pretty pictures of lakes and shores he came up with cubism , a new, strange and occasionally mad art style that involved fragmented subjects and bold, abstract outlines. Out of all his work, my favourites are his portraits. Because books about artists are two stories folded in one: While the novel is already celebrated as a story of love, loss and jealousy, art is fundamental to the story of the two siblings: Noah, a genius painter, and Jude, a master sculptor. He speaks a language of colour that a reader can lose themselves in translating: Jude, on the other hand, sets out to create a sculpture of her dead mother; I thought it was a beautiful way to express something so raw, and another example of how art in books can offer a whole new interpretation of characters. Art is a beautiful part of the world we live in, whether we read about it, create it ourselves or simply appreciate it. Topics Children's books Children's books discussions.

She's always smiling and she's always positive and trying to fight to go forward so I think a lot of that's rubbed off on us," he said. Childhood cancer survivor returns to hospital as nurse more than 20 years later. She created Emma's Art Kits, which enables young patients who are unable to leave their beds to participate in art therapy. It's part of her mission to make others smile. The kits come in a cellophane bag and arrive bedside in the hospital with all the supplies a young patient needs, for everything from painting and collage to drawing and coloring. She said the art kits were helpful for her because she wasn't able to go to the playroom or the craft room and the art therapist wasn't always able to come to her.
